Sai Baba portrait
45 x 35 cm
Baba print edition, 2008
Print edition of 20

Many years ago I became very interested in Sai Baba, a modern day avatar or guru who lives in India. He usually wears an orange gown and he has a large ‘afro’ hair style that looks like a halo. I think the owner of the ‘Hard Rock Cafe’ is a follower of Sai Baba and opinion seems to be divided as to whether Sai Baba is miracle worker or a charlatan. To be honest, I am no longer sure what to think.
In 2004 I was in an exhibition at the John Hansard gallery in Southampton, England, called ‘New British Painting’, where I exhibited amongst others, a small painting called ‘Baba’. I felt very proud to be in this exhibition, and it felt like a big achievement after years of struggle to define my artistic practice. Just before the opening night, as I past the gallery office, I noticed a small photograph or postcard of Sai Baba smiling as if saying hello.
