Tomoko Yoneda’s sensual and poetic photography combines a refreshed image of the present with strong links to historical occurrences. When looking twice at her work, this notion is prevailed by a reassuring feeling of connection to our past. With history reflecting itself in our daily lives, her images are formed through these multiple layers of memory, shocking and analytical at the same time. It is a Japanese woman’s tale of Europe’s past.
Yoneda illustrates ‘the hideous layers of history that lie beneath the serenity of the surface’ through her clever and manipulative images. These exposures are serene, sublime and demanding to the viewer, sparking off immense controversy in themselves.
Tomoko Yoneda has shown her work at the 2007 Central International Exhibition of the Venice Biennale curated by Robert Storr titled ‘Think With The Senses - Feel With The Mind’. |
