The title of this show comes from William Morris' novel of the same name written in 1890. Although all British, the work of the artists in this show appears to arrive from no single position, vantage point or particular place in time. Common amongst them is a kind of unsentimental exploration of the various aesthetic and ideological possibilities in the light of paintings historical legacy. A conspicuous aspect of these artists work is their pragmatic approach and a lack of cynicism or irony. As in Morris' text the most valuable lessons of the past are taken into the future…
